A Well Balanced Lunch

It took some doing but this sandwich was actually a balancing act of all the ingredients, not to mention a healthy lunch. My previous post was of a similar study done in pastels from a photo and now I did this in oils from life. Although the compositions are different, can you tell the difference in the amount of information given in these two paintings? I prefer the direct observation way of painting from life. I think it's the light and details that help me decide what it is I want to paint.

  1. Hi Robin, Yes, the difference between the two is huge! From the nuance of colours to the depth of shadows - and the greater substance to the form. A very rich painting. Beautiful! Love the double entendre!

  2. Robin, I love this. The colors are rich and warm. I just finished a workshop with Abbey Ryan and painting from life is a whole new world. I've painted primarily from pictures and while it is challenging for me to paint from life it is worth it. I think you get more atmosphere in real life. Great job!

  3. I really enjoy the comparison between the oil and pastel, as well as life vs photo. I think I like the life one better but love the texture on the pastel.

  5. Great painting, structure, design. I like the way you nestled the ingredients in the lettuce, balanced and asymmetrical. Great!
