Focal Point

 24" x 24" in. oil on canvas
It took me a while to finish this painting. I had to adjust the shadows. I finally also photoed this painting. Taking a picture outside made the image too blue. I ended up going into my studio using all my overhead lights. This image is very close and I'm finally happy.

Focal Point

Here's a large painting that is almost done. I'm giving it a rest and will come back to it and make any final fixes. It's 24" x 24" and was a lot of fun to paint. I'm calling it Focal Point because I see these objects leading my eyes up to the stacked cups. Anyway, my title can't name all the objects as I usually do, that would be too long!

Eggplants, Limes and a Red Pepper

I paint every day to get to the point where I'm pleased with the outcome. The role of painting for me is to lose myself in the process and to enjoy it. When life gives me challenges, I have to remind myself of the pleasures it can reward.

Proust on Chardin: Still life will become eminently alive. Like life itself, it will always have something new to tell you, some witchery to dazzle you with, some mystery to disclose.

Deep Purple Pitcher, Red Bowl and Plums

I've again set up my studio to paint by artificial light. In painting glass this summer I learned I could read colors pretty well by natural light. I loved using the morning light from my east window, but now that's not possible,  I've gone back to artificial light and I'm seeing things differently. It feels awkward. I've come to a decision to paint opaque objects like ceramics. Now my light falls on the objects instead of going through them and makes painting easier. I hope to feel more in control again.

Painting the Light

During the months of July and September I took an online class with Karen O'Neil painting glass using natural light. I set up my still lifes in my east window where the morning light was cooler and generally consistent between 10:00 and 12:30. These set ups were simple and understanding how the cool light affected their color temperature helped. The big take away of these classes was not to think of my still lifes as objects but as spots of color, one against another and let the color create the form.  For more information Hawthorne on Painting.

Washington County Antiques Fair in August

I bought these three interesting glass objects at the fair yesterday. They'll make an interesting addition to my still life collection and I know will inspire another painting.

We got to the fairgrounds at 9 AM and stayed for an hour and a half thinking we could beat the heat, but no, it got too hot. This morning it was warm and damp and our house windows were wet with dew.  I wish the current world's administration would take global warming as an actual threat.

Red Glass Bowl and Three Plums on White Plate

This painting was done in conjunction with a class I took online at the Arts Student League with Karen O'Neil. The focus of this painting was color temperature. I painted this over six days. The set up was arranged in an east window on sunny mornings and I painted from 9 - 11:30. The sky was a clear blue and that casts a cool blue light and the shadows were warm. My interest in this set up was the cad red light at the base of the bowl.

July Sales of Three Small Painting

These three paintings were purchased by a very nice couple. Pink Bowl and Lemons and Cantaloupe Wedges paintings were bought at The Blooming Arts Gallery "Let it Grow" exhibit in Clifton Park and the Green Apples on Blue Plate off of my Daily Paint Works site. I'm sure all three will look lovely in their  home.

The Blooming Artist Gallery

I was unable to make the opening reception for this show because my husband and I were vacationing in Italy. When I went today to see the show, I was surprised to see one of my paintings in the front window, three others were in the gallery.  It looked good. Thank you The Blooming Artist Gallery.

                                                         Great show!

Italy Summer 2022 - Rome, Florence and Venice

There were so many beautiful paintings and sculptures in these three cities it was hard to decide which to post, so I decided to post images of these cities' monuments and buildings. I'm including a couple images of our food, one of our fun Spritz drinks and a memorable gondola ride. We loved it.

March Drawings

I continue to draw almost everyday. It hasn't resulted in a painting, but what's nice is that I really enjoy it. Here are some of my sketches.

Turnip, Scallions and Lime

This was one of those paintings that painted itself. I didn't rework it and was satisfied with the first take. It's nice when that happens.

Working on my sketches from Sarah's online Still Life class

I've been drawing almost everyday. It's something I enjoy and can do within 30 minutes. Hopefully this leads to me routinely doing thumbnail sketches prior to painting.
