Pet Grass & Purple Cabbage

An odd couple of items, but I thought they were a nice color combination. I'm pretty sure my dog will eat the pet grass but for me, I'll sauté the cabbage in some butter for a side dish with dinner tonight.

Wide Brimmed Red Hat

This is my last hat painting. I painted this hat several times, each time trying not to paint it too pretty. I'm happy with how the bow turned out and the overall sunny feel of this painting. But in the end, it is just a study of a hat and I need to move on.

Reflected Banana

I did this painting based on the theme "Reflections". A group of artists that I used to share studio space with locally have been meeting occasionally to talk about art. We thought a monthly painting challenge based on a changing theme would be a good way to try new subject matter and be a fun way to keep in touch. This is my first challenge painting.

Tomato, Mug and Flowers

I had to paint something other than hats, especially a black hat painted in shades of gray. So I went in the opposite direction and painted a rainbow of colors. But all is not what it seems. Today was a challenge.  I began painting from life, as usual,  but couldn't get the proportions or the values right. So, I took a photo and used it as a reference. I wish I could leave my conscious mind outside the door to my studio, then on days like today I'd be ok.

Like Breakfast at Tiffany's

I recently rewatched Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. What a great romantic movie.  This black hat reminded me of the hat she wore to her weekly visits with mobster Sally Tomato in Sing Sing Prison. So elegant and worn low.  This large black straw hat has a black cloth bow and some beading.  I knew I had to paint it in shades of gray and hoped it worked.

Woman's Purple Hat

This hat was painted on a saturated orange background because I just seemed to enjoy the intense colors. The hat told me how it wanted to be painted and I just went along for the ride. Sounds silly but it's true. I love color and for today the more intense the color the better.

Pink Hat

It was this hat and the poem Hats by Glenis Redmond, which gave me the idea of painting them. I own a few, like a baseball cap, beret and a straw hat.  But the hats I've chosen to paint I could not imagine wearing, but still enjoy looking at.

Green Trilby Hat

Well, my large hat painting didn't work out.  I have another 6 hats to paint that were graciously on loan until March from a local antique shop.  I'll paint each hat on a little canvas, just suspended on a field of color. I feel so much happier that I gave up on my original idea. It was complicated and was giving me a stomach ache. Yikes! Hope you enjoy my little hats and who knows, maybe something will come of them.
