Thinking about frames

I've been thinking about framing my paintings for my show in April. I ordered my frames from the CanvasPlace.com. They're very nicely finished on both the front and back sides and reasonably priced. I just discovered they sell Panel Frames for panels 1/4" deep. Oh shucks! Now that I screwed in the hanging hardware, the next step is to cut black foam core backing boards.

White Dog with Red Harness

I'm drawn to images of happy dogs like a magnet to metal. When I was painting this dog I was thinking about how she has a powerful jaw and how often I'm intimidated by the thought of that. But, she is sharing her pleasure with the world and that caught my eye.

The Chair Challenge

Continuing with the theme of working through DPW's challenges, today I did The Chair Challenge. "Seems like everyone has their favorite spot to sit in the house. So, this week the challenge is to paint your chair." This was my grandmother's chair and when I had it recovered I tried to match her fabric. It's wood surfaces are beautifully carved and it's so deep and soft I can sit back and relax anytime.

Trudi's Glass Pitcher 2

This painting took a few days. I had to push the shadow colors and eliminate details to make it a more interesting painting.  It became a more successful painting to me.  You don't have to stick with what you see exactly as long as you know what you want the outcome to be.

The Bliss Challenge

Looking through previous challenges on DPW, I found The Bliss Challenge, "Whether through color, subject matter or treatment, your challenge this week is to create a painting that exemplifies JOY for you." I challenged myself to create a painting that was both joyful and vibrant with objects I found in my home.

The Warm/Cool Challenge

This is my submission to DPW's previous The Warm/Cool Challenge.  Here's what Carol Marine said about this challenge :
"They say if you have a variety of things in your painting it will be more interesting/dynamic. In other words, a lot of this, a little of that – not the same amount of both. This week I challenge you to practice this concept with warm and cool colors. Choose one to be dominant and make sure it takes up more than half the room in the painting. The amount left should be the other temperature." In my painting I chose cool to be dominant as well.

The German Landscape Challenge

I've decided to go back and try my hand at some of the DPW's Challenges. It might have been that at the time I had something else to say and didn't want to commit to someone else's idea of what to paint. Now I can pick and choose which challenges to try. I'm getting a lot of glare with my photos because it's been overcast and either snowing or raining. Hope it clears up soon.
